Lesson 2.1: Multiplication, Division and Remainders (answers)

Section A · Multiple choice 4 marks

1. Which division fact is in the same fact family as 6 × 9 = 54?1 mark

(A) 54 ÷ 6 = 9(B) 54 ÷ 9 = 9(C) 6 ÷ 54 = 9(D) 54 ÷ 6 = 8
Answer: (A) 54 ÷ 6 = 9A fact family uses the same three numbers. 6 × 9 = 54, so 54 ÷ 6 = 9 and 54 ÷ 9 = 6.

2. What is the remainder when 47 is divided by 6?1 mark

(A) 7(B) 5(C) 6(D) 1
Answer: (B) 56 × 7 = 42 and 47 − 42 = 5. The remainder is 5. (7 is the quotient.)

3. Which of these can NOT be the remainder when a number is divided by 8?1 mark

(A) 7(B) 4(C) 8(D) 1
Answer: (C) 8The remainder must always be smaller than the number we divide by. If it were 8 or more, we could make one more group of 8.

4. Ben has 29 counters. He puts them into groups of 6. How many full groups can he make?1 mark

Teal: 4 full groups of 6. Gold: 5 left over.
(A) 5(B) 6(C) 3(D) 4
Answer: (D) 46 × 4 = 24 and 6 × 5 = 30 is too many. He makes 4 full groups with 29 − 24 = 5 counters left over.

Section B · Write your answer 11 marks

5. 63 ÷ 9 = □1 mark

Answer: 79 × 7 = 63, so 63 ÷ 9 = 7.

6. 8 × □ = 721 mark

Answer: 972 ÷ 8 = 9, so 8 × 9 = 72.

7. Divide 38 by 5. Give the quotient and the remainder.1 mark

Answer: Quotient 7, remainder 35 × 7 = 35 and 38 − 35 = 3. So 38 ÷ 5 = 7 remainder 3.

8. 85 ÷ 9 = □ remainder □1 mark

Answer: 9 remainder 49 × 9 = 81 and 85 − 81 = 4. So 85 ÷ 9 = 9 remainder 4.

9. A number divided by 6 gives a quotient of 8 and a remainder of 5. What is the number?1 mark

Answer: 53Multiply back and add the remainder: 6 × 8 = 48, then 48 + 5 = 53.

10. Siti packs 75 sweets into bags of 8. How many full bags does she pack? How many sweets are left over?2 marks

Answer: 9 bags; 3 sweets left75 ÷ 8 = 9 remainder 3, because 8 × 9 = 72 and 75 − 72 = 3. She fills 9 bags and has 3 sweets left over.

11. There are 100 children going on a trip. Each minibus seats 12 children. How many minibuses are needed so that every child has a seat?2 marks

Answer: 9 minibuses100 ÷ 12 = 8 remainder 4. 8 minibuses seat 96 children, so 4 children still need a seat. We need one more minibus: 8 + 1 = 9.

12. What is the smallest number that must be added to 94 so that the answer can be divided by 7 with no remainder?2 marks

Answer: 494 ÷ 7 = 13 remainder 3. 7 × 13 = 91 and 7 × 14 = 98. 98 − 94 = 4, so we add 4.
